Fishing in Pennsylvania – Jim and Garry on Spring and Penn’s Creeks

Fishing in Pennsylvania – Jim and Garry on Spring and Penn’s Creeks

Text from Jim: (Thanks Jim for sharing!)

Here are a few pictures from Garry’s and my fishing trip earlier this week. On Wednesday, it was overcast and cool in the morning and then sunny and bright in the afternoon.

1. Palomino trout feeding at Benner Springs on Spring Creek.

2. 13 inch brown I caught on size 18 tan caddis on Spring Creek. I caught another one just like it moments later.

3. Garry landing 15 1/2 inch brown trout on same tan caddis on Spring Creek.

Garry and I fished Spring Creek at Benner Springs from 10 AM until 2 PM. Garry caught 2 fish on bead headed nymphs earlier in the day. When the caddis hatch was out there were lots of trout feeding . But it did not last long and then nothing. In the afternoon we fished Spring Creek at the McCoy Dam just outside of Milesberg. We fished from 4 PM until 7:30 PM. We each lost a fish as we were landing it. Then just as we were about to leave there was another caddis hatch and I caught 2 brown trout, 12 inches and 10 inches.  Garry had stopped fishing. On Thursday we fished Penn’s Creek at Cheery Run.

4. Garry fishing Penn’s Creek.

5. Penn’s Creek at Cherry Run. We fished from 9 AM until 11:30 AM.

The entire time we fished, fish were rising and feeding. We tried every fly we had and never got a strike. There was a caddis hatch most of the time. The men below us caught one fish and then gave up. It is a beautiful spot with lots of fish. Tough to wade!!!!!! See the rocks in the pictures. Take your stick if you go!!

Yellow Breeches in PA and Fly Fishing Friends

Yellow Breeches in PA and Fly Fishing Friends

Yellow Breeches in PA Our friend, Jim, sends us photos from time to time. He and his buddies love to fish.

They often fly fish the Yellow Breeches, a tributary of the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania. The first photo was taken in mid-April and here is Jim’s message.

Dave Boomer and John Mikita on the Yellow Breeches yesterday. The water was a little high and cloudy.
I caught 2 brown trout, 13 inches and 10 inches. Both on size 16 Hendrickson dry fly.
I think Dave caught the fish he is playing in the picture on a Hendrickson.
I did not get a picture of Larry Clement who did the best. He caught 5 trout on a variety of flies including a white wooly bugger.
We all had a fun time. The weather was beautiful.
Jim

Larry on Yellow Breeches The middle photo is Larry on the Yellow Breeches in early May. He caught plenty of fish that day, too, I hear.

By the way, happy tenth birthday to your beloved dog, Tres.

Jim sent us the bottom photo and within it, in the photo on the bookcase, is Jim fishing the Bitterroot River in Montana. Here is the message he sent with it.

Does this dog have a hard life or what!

TresPS: Merle and Jack, if you zoom in on the leftmost picture on my book case you will see a picture Jack took of me and an 18 inch cutthroat that I caught on the Bitterroot. Great guide!

Keep sending us your fishing photos! We love hearing from you all.

The Susquehanna River with Jim Wellendorf and Dick Lentine (Pennsylvania)

Yesterday, Jim Wellendorf sent us this message and photos. I am including the photos in a slide show. Jim, no photo of you? You must be holding the camera. Jim and Dick, thanks for sharing!

My friend, Dick Lentine, took me bass fishing this morning on the Susquehanna River. Sun rise was beautiful! Hope you enjoy it. The weather was nice to begin with but got very nasty. High winds and waves just when we were about to stop. If you ever have to land a bass boat in high winds don’t call me. Dick did a great job in very tough conditions.

The fishing was not so good, probably because of the front that was approaching. Dick caught 2 bass and I caught one. All about 12 inches long. In spite of the bass and the weather we had a good time.
The last picture is a duck hunting blind on the western side of the River.

Jim started out as a client many years ago. He became a cherished friend who stays in touch. Thank you, Jim. Your friendship enriches our lives. Due to life’s circumstances, he hasn’t been able to come out west for many years. We miss him but enjoy his frequent emails and photos.
Message from Jim:
Picture from Tuesday afternoon. Big Pine Creek is beautiful. Wide, swift and clear. Difficult to wade. Fishing was tough. Windy and no hatches. I caught the trout in the picture after my 1000th cast. I caught it on a March Brown dry fly , six 16. Nice fish.

Jim and his wife Nancy live with their six year old dog, Tres. She is a beauty!
