Doc Bolton fly fishing the Bitterroot River in mid-March

Doc Bolton fly fishing the Bitterroot River in mid-March

John came up for his spring fix in Montana and fished a few days with Jack. He caught one of the biggest trout ever on his first day fishing. Of course, they didn’t have the camera that day. So…here is another trout. Not a bad fish. There is definitely something special about spring fishing and John hit the perfect weather window.

Beautiful day on the river

Doc is up again spending some time in his cabin on the river. He loves winding down, reading, exploring and of course fishing. And, he always get fish. Here he is with a nice trout on a day he fished with Jack.

Doc was at his Montana home on the Bitterroot for a few weeks in April. Of course he was fishing with friends, on his own and with Jack. I guess Jack is also a friend – but a friend that fishes for a living. Sadly, Doc’s and our good friend and favorite fishing buddy, Terry Nobles, isn’t able to fish any more. At 90 years old, it just doesn’t work for him now. But we visit him with photos and river stories.

Anyway, here are some photos of the Bitterroot and Doc. The first two are from this spring. The second two are from 2009 when Terry fished with Doc and Jack.

Bitterroot River Brown TroutDoc Bolton is up from California again. He has a small house on the Bitterroot now and comes up at least a couple of times a year. He is fishing about four days with Jack and today, Terry Nobles is in the boat. I will pick them up at the take out. I can’t wait to get some more photos of Terry. Click Terry Nobles for more blog entries about him.

Here is a slideshow of Doc’s fishing. You will see different days, different sections of the Bitterroot River.

Bitterroot River – Doc Bolton and Terry Nobles

Doc Bolton with a cuttbow on the Bitterroot RiverYesterday Jack came home all excited about the Bitterroot again. The water temperatures are dropping (between 50-52 degrees), the cool nights, fall days and waning moon seem to help – the fishing is really turning on in the afternoons.

He was fortunate to have two of his favorite people to fish with. Doc Bolton lives in California but has come to Montana for years and now has a small homestead near the Bitterroot River. Terry Nobles is long standing Bitterroot resident and Marine veteran, the best of the best in our opinion. Both gentlemen are avid trout fishermen and Trout Unlimited supporters. You will see us all at the Bitter Root TU Banquet this Friday, September 26.Terry Nobles on the Clark Fork with Jack Mauer guiding

Doc Bolton also wrote a story called Bitterroot Morning about Doc and Terry fishing with Jack.

photos.

Above is a photo of Doc with his fish of the day. We didn’t get a photo of Terry yesterday, but to the right is one from my files. He fishes all year but we seem to get most of the photos of him and his fish in the fall like this one.
